Construction of a mixed used development for Foundation Housing comprising one 4 level building with 16 apartments over 8 commercial units and one five level building with 44 hostel rooms and a caretaker’s unit. The hostel bedrooms have their own ensuites and communal kitchens on each floor.
On the first level there is a landscaped courtyard and located on the ground floor is parking, stores, substation and bin stores. Along Newcastle Street and Zempilas Road is an awning over the footpath.
Construction is load bearing masonry/hebel blocks on concrete plate slabs. Elevations are finished in a mixture of faced brickwork, wall tiling and aluminium windows and doors. The north elevation of the hostel building is clad with multi-coloured aluminium panels/screens.
The contract also involves the restoration of a heritage listed building named ‘Schruth’s’ fronting Newcastle Street. The existing street façade is restored and new construction behind forms a tenancy for a proposed café with kitchen and toilet facilities.
